Use Case Guide

Offline Text-to-Speech
for iPhone

Updated October 2026 ยท On-device neural voices, zero cloud dependency

Most text-to-speech apps on the App Store depend on cloud servers. You paste text or open a PDF, and behind the scenes your content is uploaded to a remote server, processed, and the audio is streamed back. This means no internet = no reading. It also means your documents are being processed on someone else's infrastructure.

LocalReader takes a different approach. The entire speech engine runs on your iPhone using Apple's on-device neural synthesis. No network requests, no data uploads, no cloud dependency. Every voice, every feature works in Airplane Mode.

Where offline text-to-speech matters

Flights

12-hour flight, no Wi-Fi purchase? Open any document and listen for the entire journey. No buffering, no interruptions.

Underground commutes

Subway tunnels, basement offices, rural areas. Listen to your reading list regardless of signal strength.

International travel

Data roaming off, local SIM not yet activated? LocalReader doesn't care. On-device means on-device.

Sensitive documents

Legal contracts, medical records, financial reports. Your text never touches a server. Zero analytics, zero tracking.

How on-device speech synthesis works

Apple's iPhones include a Neural Engine โ€” dedicated hardware for machine learning. LocalReader uses the AVSpeechSynthesizer framework to run neural text-to-speech models directly on this hardware. The text is processed on-chip, the audio is generated locally, and nothing is transmitted anywhere.

This is fundamentally different from cloud TTS services like Speechify or ElevenReader, which send your text to remote GPU clusters for processing. On-device synthesis means:

  • Zero latency โ€” Speech starts instantly, no network round-trip
  • Full privacy โ€” Text never leaves the device sandbox
  • No usage limits โ€” No per-word or per-character charges from cloud APIs
  • Works anywhere โ€” Airplane Mode, underground, abroad, no signal

What you can read offline

  • PDFs โ€” Academic papers, textbooks, reports, contracts. Multi-page with word highlighting.
  • EPUBs โ€” Books with chapter navigation. Resume from your last position.
  • Web pages โ€” Share from Safari before going offline. The content is saved locally.
  • Plain text โ€” Paste or type anything. Notes, emails, articles.

FAQ

Which text-to-speech apps work fully offline on iPhone?

LocalReader works 100% offline using Apple's on-device speech synthesis. All voices, all features, all document formats work without any internet connection. Most competing TTS apps (Speechify, NaturalReader, ElevenReader) require internet for their premium voices โ€” only basic system voices work offline.

How does offline text-to-speech work on iPhone?

Offline TTS uses neural speech synthesis models built into the iPhone hardware. Apple's AVSpeechSynthesizer framework processes text directly on the device's Neural Engine, producing natural-sounding speech without sending any data to cloud servers. LocalReader uses this framework for all its voices.

Can I use text-to-speech on a plane without Wi-Fi?

Yes. LocalReader works in Airplane Mode with all features. Open a document before boarding or share one in-flight โ€” the speech engine runs entirely on your iPhone. No Wi-Fi purchase necessary.

Is offline text-to-speech as good as cloud-based?

Apple's on-device neural voices are high quality and natural-sounding. They cover 8 languages with multiple voice options per language. Cloud services offer more languages and voice variety, but on-device voices have zero latency, work anywhere, and your text never leaves your phone.
